In 2005, the Young Munich Philharmonic Orchestra - which operates under the umbrella of the Bavarian Philharmonic - developed a concert series entitled 'Mozart +', which
has since been performed annually on or around the anniversary of Mozart's birth (27 January). The programme consists of works by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and contrasting pieces by
a contemporary composer from the 20th or 21st century. Since 2005, concerts have been held in honour of Karl Amadeus Hartmann, Dmitri Shostakovich, Mario Beretta, Alfred
Schnittke, Werner Egk and, of course, Mozart.
.
In 2010, a composition by the Romanian composer Violeta Dinescu will be performed alongside works by Mozart. Dinescu has received over 50 international prizes and awards for her contemporary compositions to date. She has been lecturing at
various German universities since 1986 and assumed the post of Professor of Applied Composition at the University of Oldenburg in 1996.
The gala concert will feature solo performances by the flautist Sarah Gruber and the double bassist Thierry Roggen. Both artists were awarded scholarships by the LYRA Foundation,
which was established by the Swiss banker Dr. Hans Vontobel in order to give gifted young musicians an opportunity to perform in public.
Before going on tour, the young musicians will rehearse their ambitious selection of works at the Kultur- & Bildungszentrum in Oberbayern Kloster Seeon. They will subsequently
give concerts in Munich, Zurich and the Black Forest, as well as performing in Vienna for the first time in 2010.
